Restore Balance & Ease
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing discovered by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, during his studies of Indian sutras and Sanskrit texts in the late 1800s. Its origins are believed to go back much further, to ancient Lemuria - also known as Mu - from where it travelled through China and Tibet.
‘Rei’ means ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ means life energy, so the term Reiki translates as ‘universal energy’. Practitioners are tuned into this energy by their teachers, who give them sacred symbols they can use to channel Reiki into the physical and subtle energy bodies of their clients, promoting deep relaxation and healing. There are various different styles of Reiki: the styles I work with are Usui (or Holy Fire) and Seichem. I am
a member of the UK Reiki Federation and that I adhere to their code of ethics.
Reiki can be used on its own or in combination with massage, and it can be given when you are seated or lying down. You don’t have to undress for a Reiki treatment; in fact, you don’t even have to be touched, because Reiki works just as well with the practitioner’s hands held over your body. It’s a gentle treatment that is suitable for children as well as adults.
During a treatment, a Reiki practitioner will place their hands gently on or over your body and channel Reiki using techniques such as beaming the energy or filling up areas with Reiki. As well as treating your physical body, the Reiki treats your subtle energy fields, including the etheric, emotional, mental and spiritual energetic bodies. I also use it to ‘comb’ and cleanse your aura, to treat and fine-tune your energy centres, or chakras, and to clear any stagnant or unhelpful energy.
During the treatment you may feel warmth or cold coming from my hands, and you may see colours and images. You might feel a breeze, or a pulsating sensation and you’ll almost certainly feel deeply relaxed. Reiki is excellent for bringing your subtle energy fields, including the etheric, emotional, mental and spiritual energetic bodies into alignment. It is lovely when combined with massage. Massage works from the outside in and Reiki works from the inside out, so they complement each other.
Reiki gives a sense of balance and wholeness and is particularly effective in helping with recovery from chronic pain, injuries, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, headaches, neurological imbalances and digestive issues.
Reiki gives a sense of balance and wholeness. Many people come to me simply because they enjoy the feeling of wellbeing it creates; other come with conditions such as chronic pain, injuries, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, headaches, neurological imbalances and digestive issues. I’ve also treated people who are recovering from operations.
